Being a PM is hard. How to make sure that it’s a career you need?

As a PM with 10+ years of experience in Tech, I understand that this job is not for everyone.

How to make sure that this job is right for you?

First of all, I recommend trying any Individual Contributor job in Tech first. This will give you the tech skills and will help you watch how Tech teams and Tech PMs work. If after that you feel that the PM job is still interesting, then start learning. Besides all the books, courses, and videos, you can ask the PMs you know to recommend you some career paths and learning materials. It will be also great to ask some of them to become your mentor.

Product Management skills vary depending on the industry type, the company size, and many other factors. It’s better to find a mentor whose path is the same that you want to pursue. Or you can identify the knowledge areas that you want to cover in the nearest future and find separate mentors for each of them.
